About the Item

Basque workshop, cabinet, pine and wrought iron, Spain, 1950s. This piece is defined by its ironwork: full-height flat strap hinges span the entire length of the lower cabinet door, iron ring pulls dress the two upper drawers, and a row of round iron studs punctuates the outer perimeter of the top surface, creating a decorative texture consistent with Basque metalwork tradition. The door panel and the side panels are carved with a geometric interlocking relief pattern. The pale knotty pine shows open grain, visible knots, and minimal finish treatment, consistent with Basque cabinet-making in which material honesty is central. Two flush drawers occupy the upper register above the single-door lower cabinet; the door opens to a fitted interior. The combination of wrought iron strap hinges, carved geometric panels, and pale knotty pine is a recognised diagnostic for Basque artisan workshops of the Spanish Basque country during the mid-twentieth century. Well suited to rustic, brutalist, or collected interiors. Wear consistent with age and use.

Spanish Brutalist Carved Oak Cabinet, Late 19th Century Revival Period "The soul of a building, like that of a man, is in its structure." — Luis Barragán A commanding expression of Spanish Brutalist craftsmanship, this late 19th-century Revival period cabinet is a testament to the region’s tradition of bold, sculptural woodworking. Hand-carved from solid oak, its imposing presence is softened by intricate geometric and folkloric reliefs, each chiseled motif narrating a story of heritage and artisanal mastery.
