About the Item

French workshop, two-door armoire with geometric coffered panel doors, solid oak, France, 1940s. Solid natural oak. Two full-height hinged doors, each entirely covered with a dense grid of raised rectangular panels of varying sizes. Square panels are interspersed with narrow vertical and horizontal frames, the coffered surface covering each door face completely without any plain field. A surface of continuous shadow and light, architecturally elaborate for a workshop piece. Simple box cornice. Plain square feet. The two-door coffered oak armoire opens to full-height interior storage suited to clothing or linen. The density and precision of the geometric panel grid make it a visually strong piece, suited to a bedroom, entrance hall or library. Natural oak aged to a warm honey tone with open grain throughout. Good vintage condition. Solid oak structurally sound, geometric panel mouldings crisp throughout, patina consistent with age and use.
