About the Item

French Basque workshop, armoire with two doors, stripped oak, France, 1950s. Each door is divided into three stacked panels. The upper and lower panels carry a concentric rosette carved in strong relief, a disc of nested rings struck with a compass. The central panel takes a radiating star, its points faceted like diamond points, so the facade reads as six carved fields set in a calm rhythm. The stiles carry plain fielded panels, the cornice projects in a single clean moulding, and the piece rests on a solid plinth carried by short square feet. A forged iron escutcheon and matching hardware sit on the central stile. The oak has been stripped back to a pale blond surface, open grained, with the medullary rays clearly legible. The compass drawn rosette descends from the kutxa marriage chests of the Basque country and was revived by regionalist workshops on both slopes of the Pyrenees between the wars and into the postwar years. Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and use.
