About the Item

A reverent echo of 17th century English cabinetry, this 19th-century oak chest of drawers embodies the bold geometry and sculptural massing of the Jacobean tradition. The façade is animated with applied moldings—angular lozenges, chamfered quadrants, and rectangular blocks—each element framing the drawer fronts like a miniature architectural grid. In the style of the Charles II period, this piece belongs to the 19th century revival of English historic forms, when Gothic, Elizabethan, and Jacobean idioms were reinterpreted with Victorian craftsmanship. Its ornament is precise but not overwrought, capturing the visual weight and order of the earlier era while revealing a 19th century sensibility in the tooling and construction. Executed in solid oak, the chest comprises four drawers of graduated height, with hand-cut joinery and paneled sides. The finish is matte, softly weathered—possibly lime-washed or sympathetically stripped—revealing the medullary ray patterning and warmth of aged English oak. The brass drop pulls, with foliate escutcheons, are likely original or early replacements faithful to the period style. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain its structural integrity while honoring its original patina. This Jacobean Revival chest offers historic gravitas and graphic clarity—equally suited to period interiors or as a sculptural counterpoint in contemporary spaces. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.
