About the Item

Danish chest of drawers in solid oak, attributed to Henning Kjærnulf, 1960s. The case holds three long drawers, each divided visually into three panels by applied moulding, with the quartered oak laid so the grain fans outward from the centre of each drawer front. Drawers are dovetailed at the corners and run on wood-to-wood construction, with the top edge carved in a continuous shell-and-swag motif. Hardware is cast brass in a scrolling foliate pattern, paired with matching brass escutcheons at the centre locks. The case sits on cabriole legs with a shaped, carved apron below the lowest drawer, giving the piece a distinctly Rococo Revival silhouette rather than a plain mid-century form. The combination of quarter-sawn oak, carved detailing, and cabriole legs points to a Danish workshop drawing on 18th-century French forms, a pairing occasionally seen in Kjærnulf's furniture output. Compact proportions and a warm, honey-toned finish suit a bedroom or entry. A well-built chest with genuine cabinetmaking throughout.
