About the Item

This provincial sideboard from northern China has a simple, clean-lined form. The large coffer dates to the late 19th century and is crafted of northern elm (yumu) with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. A dark finish of sheer black lacquer cloaks the exterior, now richly worn with an antique patina and a subtle crackle. The square-corner cabinet provides ample storage with four drawers and three sets of doors that open to interior shelving. A small hinged panel set into the top opens to the interior compartment, complete with a brass coin slot for stowing away valuables. With minimal decoration and great texture, the rustic coffer finds its place in the modern home as a sideboard, buffet or credenza.
