About the Item

Spanish workshop, sideboard, elm, Spain, 1950s. Four drawers sit in the frieze above four doors, and the entire front is worked into a close grid of small square panels raised in strong relief, each field framed by heavy mouldings that catch the light and throw it back in a steady chequer. The elm has been stripped to a pale blond tone, leaving the long parallel grain open and the surface matte. Forged iron carries the working parts, with shaped escutcheons, drawer pulls and long strap hinges beaten at the anvil and set flush against the wood. The case rests on turned baluster columns joined by a low stretcher, and a thick plank top overhangs on all sides. Furniture of this kind came from Castilian and Basque workshops that continued the sixteenth century vocabulary of coffered panelling and hand forged fittings well into the twentieth century, supplying dining rooms across Spain in the decades after the war. At 195 cm the case reads as an architectural band across a wall, and the drawers keep linen and flatware close to the table. Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and use.

Spanish Oak Sideboard - Carved Grid Panels - Wrought Iron Hardware, 1950s

Spanish Oak Sideboard - Carved Grid Panels - Wrought Iron Hardware, 1950s

Located in Kaštel Sućurac, HR

Spanish Basque workshop, four-door sideboard, solid oak, Spain, 1950s. The two central doors carry an interlocking rectangular grid motif carved in bold relief, a pattern of nested frames that creates depth and rhythm across the front face, while the two outer doors are panelled in plain horizontal planks to give the composition a satisfying contrast of decorated and plain surfaces. Two drawers fitted above the central doors provide additional storage. The wood is pale natural oak, left with minimal finish so the open grain remains prominent and the surface retains a raw, honest character throughout. All hardware is hand-forged black iron: strap hinges with scroll ends, ring pulls mounted on decorative backplates, and diagonal bar latches on the door fronts. This combination of carved oak relief with ornamental ironwork is characteristic of Basque furniture...
