About the Item

Spanish Basque workshop, four-door sideboard, solid oak, Spain, 1950s. A long, low case built entirely in solid oak and stripped back to a pale, open-grained surface with almost no finish, so the wood reads raw and matte rather than waxed. Each of the four doors carries four square panels set in a two by two grid, moulded in strong relief so the facade builds a deep rhythm of light and shadow across its full width. The hardware is hand-forged black iron throughout: long straight strap hinges finished in cut fleurons, pierced escutcheons worked at the anvil, and forged pulls. A scalloped apron runs along the lower edge in shallow festoons. The corner stiles continue downward as square-section feet, with a small turned foot placed at the centre of the front. The top is a thick plank with a sharp, unmoulded edge. Furniture of this kind was produced in the workshops of northern Spain and the Basque provinces through the middle of the twentieth century, drawing on Castilian panelled joinery and local blacksmithing traditions. Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and use.

Spanish Oak Sideboard - Carved Grid Panels - Wrought Iron Hardware, 1950s

Spanish Oak Sideboard - Carved Grid Panels - Wrought Iron Hardware, 1950s

Located in Kaštel Sućurac, HR

Spanish Basque workshop, four-door sideboard, solid oak, Spain, 1950s. The two central doors carry an interlocking rectangular grid motif carved in bold relief, a pattern of nested frames that creates depth and rhythm across the front face, while the two outer doors are panelled in plain horizontal planks to give the composition a satisfying contrast of decorated and plain surfaces. Two drawers fitted above the central doors provide additional storage. The wood is pale natural oak, left with minimal finish so the open grain remains prominent and the surface retains a raw, honest character throughout. All hardware is hand-forged black iron: strap hinges with scroll ends, ring pulls mounted on decorative backplates, and diagonal bar latches on the door fronts. This combination of carved oak relief with ornamental ironwork is characteristic of Basque furniture...
