French Armoire in Natural Oak, 1950s An elegant two-door armoire in pale, natural oak, made in France in the mid-20th century, circa the 1950s. The full-height cabinet is built from warm, light oak and holds a calm, architectural form, a rectilinear body with a clean overhanging cornice, the moulded top edge, set above a scalloped apron that rests on short shaped feet. The proportions are upright and generous without heaviness, the pale tone of the wood keeping the whole piece airy. The defining gesture is the pair of doors, each worked with a large croisillon, a lattice of crossed diagonals forming a repeating lozenge or diamond pattern, here built up in applied half-round oak mouldings laid over the panel rather than carved into it. Between the two doors runs a narrow fluted pilaster, a vertical band of close parallel grooves, which gives the centre of the cabinet a quiet rhythm and separates the two lattice fields cleanly. The effect is graphic and almost drawn, geometry used as the only ornament on otherwise plain oak. The hardware is restrained and functional, with small brass ring escutcheons, the plates surrounding the keyholes, and working locks that retain their brass keys. Behind the doors the armoire offers versatile enclosed storage and adapts easily to use as a wardrobe or as general storage in a bedroom, hallway or dressing room. The piece is in good vintage condition consistent with its age and use, with light marks and small signs of wear as expected of a piece of this period, and the oak retains an attractive natural patina throughout. Its design belongs to a clear French lineage: the croisillon, or trellis, was a signature motif of Jean Royère, who gave the name to a whole series of oak pieces in the late 1940s and 1950s, and it sits alongside the carved-oak case furniture, where lattice door fronts, fluted detailing and shaped bases defined the look of the French Reconstruction era. It is a refined and genuinely usable example of that tradition, architectural in presence yet light in tone.
