About the Item

Rare Dutch Mid-Century desk from Tijsseling features a floating rosewood-veneered top with rich, dark-streaked grain over a black-finished underside — a clean detail that reinforces the top's visual lift above the drawer pedestals. Two symmetrical three-drawer pedestals provide six drawers of storage total, each fitted with rectangular aluminum bar pulls. Square chrome legs support the configuration, providing a 23.75 inch seat clearance. Tijsseling produced furniture during the Dutch postwar modernist period, when designers were synthesizing Scandinavian material sensibilities with a more streamlined, functional European approach. The use of rosewood veneer alongside chrome and aluminum reflects the period's enthusiasm for pairing warm natural materials with industrial metals — a hallmark of 1960s European office and residential furniture. The desk shows wear consistent with age and use.
