About the Item

An exceptional late 19th-century mechanical musical automaton table in premium burr walnut. Features a fully functional, flawless cylinder movement accompanied by six brass bells. Complete with 5 interchangeable cylinders playing an extensive repertoire of 40 tunes (8 melodies per cylinder). This extraordinary musical box table (circa 1880-1890) represents the pinnacle of late Victorian mechanical luxury, beautifully merging high-end cabinetmaking with complex musical engineering. The entire piece is veneered in premium, mirrored burr walnut (root veneer) featuring deep, rich grain patterns, further accented by delicate boxwood stringing and contrasting ebonized borders. The table is raised on elegant, sweeping ebonized cabriole legs that provide a striking silhouette. The center of the top rising lid features an exquisite, intricately detailed mother-of-pearl inlaid medallion. The Musical Movement & Extensive Repertoire: The top lid opens to reveal a magnificent, highly sophisticated cylinder musical movement. Operated by a heavy brass crank-handle on the left, the mechanism plays flawlessly. The music is produced by a perfectly preserved steel comb and beautifully accompanied by a vertical chime of six polished brass bells struck by decorative hammers. What makes this particular piece an outstanding collector's item is its vast musical repertoire. The table is accompanied by a total of 5 interchangeable music cylinders, with each cylinder programmed to play 8 distinct melodies—offering a grand total of 40 tunes. Four cylinders are nestled safely in the custom-partitioned drawer compartments, and one is positioned deeper within the mechanism/vault setup. Maker / Origin Note: The top section of the piece features the prominent antique initials "SW". This likely attributes the exquisite musical movement to a premier Swiss manufacturer of the era (such as Samuel Troll / Swiss Workmanship) or represents a bespoke monogram of the wealthy original nineteenth-century patron who commissioned this luxury automaton. Condition Report: Mechanical Condition: Perfect / Flawless. The musical mechanism has been tested and is in absolute working order, playing beautifully and shifting between tunes without any mechanical faults or missing teeth. Cabinetry & Aesthetics: Very good antique condition overall. The burr walnut veneer retains an excellent honey-gold color and a fine natural patina. The mother-of-pearl inlay is completely intact. Minor Flaws to Note: There are two small black wooden trim strips missing from the underside of the top flip-up lid (not visible when closed). The original winding/locking key is not present.
