About the Item

Hand-wrought iron safe hand-made in Italy in the early 1800s. The safe is made of thin sheets of iron folded and nailed together over a wooden case. Thicker bands of iron were then used to consolidate the structure. On the front the safe has a beautifully decorated door composed of different sheets of polished iron decorated with large rivets. As shown in the video, one of the rivets moves to spring open the keyhole to open the safe. Although the internal locking mechanisms is still intact and original, at some point the key must have been lost and a new key and key cylinder were created. Nevertheless the mechanisms is still the same, and a specific sequence must be followed to open it. Overall this is a beautiful, medium-sized antique safe that could be walled as well as placed next to a sofa or a bed as a side table.
