About the Item

This antique bronze drum table is based on ancient forms created by the Dong Son culture of Vietnam as early as 600 BCE. Precious objects with spiritual significance, bronze drums were first and foremost musical instruments. Often referred to as “rain drums,” the bronze drums were brought aboard boats and played during water festivals, wherein the thunderous sound of drums was thought to encourage rainfall and celebrate the rainy season. Beautifully aged with light oxidation and a dark patina, this rain drum is decorated with exquisite detail using the lost-wax casting method. The pointed star on the face of the drum represents the sun, around which bands of geometric motifs radiate in concentric circles like ripples in a pond. Small frogs stacked atop one another encircle the rim and a procession of small elephants ascends the side. The sculptural drum makes for an incredible side table, whether placed indoors beside a sofa or outdoors in the garden to amplify rainfall.
