About the Item

Decorative panels created using the reverse-painting technique on traditional handcrafted glass. They depict elephants and baby elephants in the savanna. The golden background lends depth and elegance to the composition. It evokes both Japanese screens and Art Deco animal paintings. The artist, Benoît Desclos le Peley, specializes in the technique of reverse glass painting. This is an ancient and complex technique that only a few artists have mastered today. The difficulty lies in the fact that the subject is painted on the back of the glass panel. To achieve this, the foreground is painted before the background. Every brushstroke must be carefully planned in advance, as no corrections are possible. Beyond the technique, it is also the materials that make this painting unique. The glass is both glossy and transparent. It brings the paintings to life through its reflections, enhances the colors, and protects them like a varnish, while other metals add to the preciousness of the compositions. The three panels are framed with black moldings and mounted on plywood. In his paintings, Benoît Desclos le Peley expresses his sensitivity to the flora and fauna that occupy the majority of his work. The technical difficulty, the luxury of the materials, and their rarity are all reasons that explain the appeal Benoît Desclos le Peley holds for contemporary interior designers.
