About the Item

A commanding mid-century wildlife painting by South African artist J. Carley, dating to the 1950s and depicting two African elephants emerging through dense bush and broken woodland. The elephants are rendered with expressive, heavily worked brushstrokes, particularly visible across their ears, trunks and legs, giving the animals a strong sense of movement and physical presence. The surrounding landscape is built up in layered tones of deep green, ochre and pale yellow, creating a richly atmospheric interpretation of the African bush. The painting is presented in an exceptional period frame of dark wood, incorporating recessed black panels with raised gilt animal motifs, scrolling decoration and ornamental detailing to the corners and central sections. The substantial frame gives the work an architectural quality and considerably enhances its presence on the wall. A highly decorative and characterful example of mid-century African wildlife art, with an imposing scale and wonderfully elaborate presentation. We ship tracked, worldwide.
