Francesco Sena, “Paesaggio Urbano” A large-scale, unique mixed-media work by Italian contemporary artist Francesco Sena (b. 1966). The handwritten tag attached to the work identifies the title as “Paesaggio Urbano” and the technique as “tecnica mista (cera e plastilina) su pannello” — mixed media with wax and plasticine on panel. Sena uses translucent layers of colored wax to veil and transform the underlying photographic image. In “Paesaggio Urbano,” a roadway and architectural landscape emerge through an intense yellow-green surface, creating a shifting sense of depth, atmosphere and memory. The image appears suspended beneath the material, giving the work a distinctive presence between photography, painting and low relief. Landscape, architecture and the human environment are recurring subjects within Sena’s practice. His layered surfaces soften recognizable imagery and transform familiar places into more elusive, contemplative compositions. Born in Avellino, Italy, in 1966, Francesco Sena lives and works in Turin. His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and institutions throughout Europe, Asia and the United States.
