About the Item

Antique Eider Duck Lithographs Set of 4, Somateria mollissima, Sweden 1929 Description: This elegant set of four Scandinavian ornithological lithographs illustrates the Common Eider, Somateria mollissima, one of the most iconic sea ducks of northern Europe and the Arctic coasts. The prints originate from the distinguished Swedish natural history publication Svenska Fåglar Efter Naturen Och På Sten Ritade, issued in Sweden in 1929 by the Stockholm publisher A. Börtzells. The series represents the refined Nordic tradition of early twentieth-century wildlife illustration, combining scientific accuracy with the calm and harmonious aesthetic associated with Scandinavian design. The set presents several stages and plumage variations of the Common Eider, providing a remarkable visual study of this coastal species. One plate shows the male in winter or transitional plumage, another depicts the fully developed adult male in breeding plumage with its striking black-and-white contrast and pale green nape, while a third plate illustrates the male in summer plumage when the colors soften and darken. The fourth image presents a young bird (downy juvenile), offering a rare and charming glimpse of the species in its earliest stage of life. Each bird is depicted in a natural coastal setting, typically resting on rocks along the shoreline with calm water and distant landscapes in the background. The artist carefully renders the rich feather textures, subtle tonal shading, and distinctive body shape that characterize the eider duck. The compositions remain balanced and understated, allowing the viewer to focus on the biological details of the species while maintaining a decorative harmony typical of Scandinavian natural history illustration. Below each image appears the Latin scientific name Somateria mollissima together with the Swedish name Ejder, reflecting the educational purpose of the publication and its role in documenting the birdlife of the Nordic region. Such plates were originally intended to accompany scientific descriptions of each species, serving both as accurate visual references and as works of artistic craftsmanship. Lithography allowed artists to reproduce fine tonal variations and intricate feather patterns with exceptional clarity. Scandinavian publishers of the early twentieth century became particularly respected for their high-quality natural history works, and the Svenska Fåglar series stands as an excellent example of this tradition. Displayed together, these four lithographs form a visually rich study of one of the most important seabirds of northern Europe. The subtle palette of soft browns, greys, creams, and blacks makes the set especially attractive for coastal homes, libraries, or Scandinavian-inspired interiors. As a group, they create a refined decorative arrangement that combines scientific heritage with timeless design. Condition: Good condition for their age with light age toning to the paper and occasional minor spotting in the margins. The printed images remain clean and well preserved. Framing tips: These prints frame beautifully as a curated wall arrangement. A museum-style presentation with generous ivory mats and simple walnut, oak, or Scandinavian-style frames works particularly well. They may be displayed as a vertical sequence illustrating plumage stages or arranged in a balanced two-by-two grid. Technique: Color lithographs Series: Svenska Fåglar Efter Naturen Och På Sten Ritade Maker: A. Börtzells, Sweden, 1929
