About the Item

Antique Scandinavian Bird Lithographs – Velvet Scoter Ducks, Svenska Fåglar 1929 This elegant set of three Scandinavian ornithological lithographs depicts the Velvet Scoter (Oidemia fusca), one of the characteristic sea ducks of northern Europe. The prints originate from the distinguished Swedish natural history publication Svenska Fåglar Efter Naturen Och På Sten Ritade, published in Sweden in 1929 by A. Börtzells. The title of the work translates as “Swedish Birds Drawn from Nature and Lithographed on Stone,” reflecting the scientific precision and artistic discipline that define this notable Nordic ornithological series. The Velvet Scoter is a powerful diving duck found along the coasts and inland waters of Scandinavia and the Baltic region. In this set the species is illustrated in several plumage variations, including the adult male, the female, and a younger male in its second winter plumage. The adult male appears in rich dark plumage with a distinctive pale marking around the eye and a striking orange-yellow bill. The female, shown in softer brown tones with delicate feather patterning, reflects the species’ natural sexual dimorphism. The younger male demonstrates transitional plumage as it gradually develops the darker coloration associated with maturity. Early twentieth-century ornithological publications often presented birds in multiple plumage stages to aid accurate identification in the field and to illustrate differences between sex and age. This educational approach made works like Svenska Fåglar both scientific references and visually compelling works of natural history illustration. The artistic style of these plates is characteristic of Scandinavian wildlife illustration. The birds are presented against soft neutral backgrounds with minimal environmental detail, often resting on a rock or near calm water. This restrained composition allows attention to focus on the anatomy, feather structure, and coloration of the bird itself. The result is both scientifically informative and aesthetically balanced, embodying the understated elegance associated with Nordic design traditions. The prints were produced using color lithography, with the colors printed directly during the lithographic process rather than applied later by hand. This technique allowed printers to achieve subtle tonal transitions and consistent coloration while preserving the fine detail typical of high-quality stone lithography. The warm cream paper and gentle palette enhance the calm and refined appearance of the prints. Today, plates from the Svenska Fåglar series are admired by collectors of ornithological illustration as well as by interior designers seeking refined natural history imagery. Waterfowl subjects such as these are especially popular for coastal homes, modern interiors, and Scandinavian-inspired spaces where natural themes and soft neutral colors are appreciated. The prints are offered unframed. Condition report: The lithographs are in very good condition with light age toning to the paper and minor edge wear consistent with prints that were originally issued in a bound volume. The colors remain strong and well preserved. No significant tears or losses observed. Framing tips: These prints frame beautifully as a coordinated trio. A thin walnut, oak, or matte black frame combined with generous ivory matting enhances the Scandinavian aesthetic and creates a refined gallery presentation. They also work well as part of a larger wall arrangement of Nordic bird prints.
