About the Item

Antique print titled 'Ulysse & ses Compagnons (..)'. This print depicts Ulysses and his Companions avoiding the charms of the Sirens. Before his great journey, Circe warned Ulysses of the dangers of the Sirens, Parthenope, Ligea and Leucosia. Malevolent creatures of the sea, Sirens preyed upon the living by luring them to their death with their sweet song. No man could resist their singing. Nearing them, Ulysses stopped up his men's ears with wax and had himself strapped to the mast of his ship, thus escaping certain death. This print originates from 'Tafereel, of Beschryving van den prachtigen Tempel der Zang-Godinnen' by B. Picart. Artists and Engravers: Published by H. Chatelain, Amsterdam. Condition: Very good, please study image carefully. Date: 1733 Overall size: 28.5 x 42 cm. Image size: 24 x 34 cm. Whilst cartography holds a special place in our collection, we also offer thousands of antique prints covering fields of interest as diverse as architecture, natural history, religion, ethnology and many more.
