About the Item

Dutch Statesmen and Admiral – Pauw, Hein, and Cats, c.1750 Copper Engravings This striking set of three 18th-century copper engravings presents portraits of key figures from the Dutch Republic’s political and naval history: Adriaan Pauw, Pieter Pieterszoon Hein, and Jacob Cats. Each portrait is framed in an ornate oval with a nameplate in crisp lettering, evoking the formal style of official commemorative prints. Adriaan Pauw (1585–1653), Heer van Heemstede, served as Grand Pensionary of Holland and played a pivotal role in Dutch diplomacy, notably in the negotiations of the Peace of Münster (1648) that ended the Eighty Years’ War with Spain. Pieter Pieterszoon Hein (1577–1629), Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland, was one of the most celebrated naval commanders of his time, remembered for capturing the Spanish treasure fleet in 1628 — a feat that brought immense wealth to the Dutch Republic. Jacob Cats (1577–1660), Grand Pensionary and poet, is famed for his statesmanship and literary works, earning a place as one of the most beloved moralist poets of the Dutch Golden Age. These portraits, produced around 1750, offer a detailed study of 17th-century attire, from Hein’s ornate ruff collar and military chain of office to Cats’s fur-trimmed robe and Pauw’s dignified black attire with an elaborate lace collar. The engravings not only immortalise their likenesses but also reflect the national pride of the Dutch Republic in its leaders and heroes. Technique: Copper engraving on laid paper, executed with fine line work and subtle shading. The engraver’s skill is evident in the textures of fabrics, intricate lacework, and expressive facial rendering. Condition: Good for age. Paper clean and stable with light toning and faint foxing in margins. Minor handling marks present but no major tears or repairs. Visible plate marks frame each portrait attractively. Framing tips: For an elegant presentation, use a dark wooden or black frame with a warm cream or ivory mount. To echo the historical period, consider an antique-style gilt moulding. A triple set display in a single frame would enhance their impact as a cohesive group. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Unknown Dutch engraver, Netherlands, c.1750
