About the Item

These vintage earrings are large, sexy and dramatic, yet lightweight enough to be worn comfortably. And converted from their original clip-ons (ouch!) to posts with omega keepers, they'll stay on your ears no matter what mischief you get into! The original pearls were very creamy with only medium nacre, so we replaced them with gorgeous, high-octane 8.5mm Akoya saltwater cultured pearls from our pearl dealer, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls. He gave us two outstanding round pearls with high marks in every category -- flawless skin, high luster, thick nacre, and strong pink overtones on an impeccable white body color. The nicely detailed golden petals frame tiny coin-edged platinum navettes pavé-set with twenty single-cut diamonds with an estimated total weight of 0.15 to 0.20 carats. These diamonds are small but they're clean and, given the age of these earrings, they're most assuredly natural and earth-mined. The closures are posts with omega keepers. If you prefer posts with butterfly (aka tension) backs, just let us know and we'll convert them for you. We'll provide 14 karat butterfly backs at no charge, or you can have 18 karat backs for a small additional charge. Stamped "18K," plus "10% IRID PLAT" for 90% platinum, but there is no maker's mark. The lack of a maker's mark makes it challenging to date these earrings, but we have some clues. The use of 10% iridium platinum alloy suggest American manufacture since this formulation is somewhat uncommon outside the United States. That doesn't narrow it down very much, but the fact that the small diamonds are single cut instead of the contemporary standard brilliant cut is a strong indicator of pre-1970 production. Finally, the style seems typical of the 1950's appetite for mixed metals and big pearls. About 1.2" (30mm) wide, tip-to-tip, these earrings weigh 15.5 grams.
