Carmen
Carmen

Carmen

By Marc Chagall

Located in Palo Alto, CA

Color lithograph on Arches wove paper. This work is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887–Saint-Paul, 1985) in black crayon in the lower margin. Numbered 114/200 in the lower right margin. A small inscription in the lower left plate states: 'D'Apres Marc Chagall - Ch. Sorlier Grav,' indicating Charles Sorlier as the engraver of the piece. Printed by Mourlot, Paris for the Editions of the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Catalogue Raisonné: Carmen, 1966, is documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the final sale of the work). 1. Sorlier, Charles. Chagall Lithographs, Vol. V 1974-79. New York: Crown Publishers, 1984. Listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonné no. 39. 2. Sorlier, Charles. Chagall's Posters: A Catalogue Raisonné. New York: Crown Publishers, 1975. Page 110 Upon adapting Carmen to a large-scale format to occupy the height of the façade of the Metropolitan Opera House, “Chagall was indefatigable in attempting time after time to achieve the desired result, with ever-increasing effectiveness” (Sorlier 110). The outcome was a meticulously detailed and marvelous work. Several retouches and color & compositional changes resulted in several months of perfecting the work. Carmen is proof of Chagall’s enduring talent and skill of extracting each color and pushing it to its boldest and brightest to create a scene of dazzling performers set over a dreamy cityscape. This is considered one of Chagall’s best lithographs. In the center of this monumental composition, a whimsical mandolin player captures our attention, dressed in a bright, colorful costume as he twirls his instrument; this musician was later revealed to be the artist’s close confidante, Rudolf Bing, director of the Metropolitan Opera House at the time. It was a secret—yet recognizable—portrait of not only his friend but also the patron who commissioned this piece. Surrounding this central musician, two figures gracefully perform for an awestruck audience. Colorful animals flit throughout the composition, while at the bottom, a city of skyscrapers guides our eye upwards, relaying the impression that the central figures are suspended in midair. From the superb coloration to the joyous expressions of the figures, this magnificent piece transports us to Chagall’s magical, carefree world. Marc Chagall Carmen...

BATHOS / Tail PIece

WILLIAM HOGRATH (1767- 1764) THE BATHOS / Tail Piece 1764 (Paulson 1989: 216 I/I Paulson 1965/70: 216 I/I) Engraving Plate 12 7/8 x 13 3/8, sheet 17 ¾ x 18 ¾ Designed & Engrav’d by Wm Hogarth at left and Published according to Act of Parliam’t March 3, 1764 at right. Good condition on thick laid paper Small bit of tape on the left & right sheet edges small stan lower sheet edge all on recto. This Hogarth’s last print is fascinating as it is prophacy about death. Various institutions have interesting commentaries - to wit: Chicago Art Institute: Hogarth created The Bathos toward the end of his life. It is considered one of the bleakest artworks of the 18th century because it depicts the Apocalypse without an afterlife. The Angel of Death even collapses in exhaustion after having destroyed the world. In his hand is an execution decree and around him lies a mass of broken objects. Princeton: Hogarth’s last print, The Bathos,….. is filled with all manner of images denoting the end of life as we know it. Entry no. 216 in Ronald Paulson’s catalogue raisonne Hogarth’s Graphic Works, 3rd revised edition says “This print is the culmination of such pessimistic images . . . . [taking] his general composition, the configuration of objects, and some of the particular items, from Dürer’s engraving, Melancholia; but he also recalls Salvator Rosa’s Democritus in Meditation (which derives from Dürer’s print) with a scroll at the bottom of the etching: ‘Democritus the mocker of all things, confounded by the ending of All Things’ (Antal, p.168).” Newfields (Indianapolis Museum of Art): Hogarth intended this engraving to serve as the tailpiece to bound volumes of his collected engravings and, appropriately, it proved to be his last engraving. Father Time has died and his last will and testament has been witnessed by the three Fates. He is surrounded by a landscape of death, decay, and ruin. Hogarth aimed this print at dealers in “dark” Old Masters paintings who promoted the idea that ruins evoked sublime feelings in viewers—a sentiment, Hogarth wrote, that was reducing the world to ruin. Alexander Calder Mid Century Derrière le Miroir Lithograph

By Alexander Calder

Located in Soquel, CA

Vintage 1960s Alexander Calder Lithograph double page part of portfolio "Derriere le Miroir". Published by: Galerie Maeght, Paris, 1966. No. 156. Text on verso. Unsigned, from an unknown edition. Presented in black mat with red core. Mat size: 20"H x 24"W. Image size: 15"H x 22"W. American artist Alexander Calder changed the course of modern art by developing an innovative method of sculpting, bending, and twisting wire to create three-dimensional “drawings in space.” Resonating with the Futurists and Constructivists, as well as the language of early nonobjective painting, Calder’s mobiles (a term coined by Marcel Duchamp in 1931 to describe his work) consist of abstract shapes made of industrial materials––often poetic and gracefully formed and at times boldly colored––that hang in an uncanny, perfect balance. His complex assemblage Cirque Calder (1926–31), which allowed for the artist’s manipulation of its various characters presented before an audience, predated Performance Art by some 40 years. Later in his career, Calder devoted himself to making outdoor monumental sculptures...
