About the Item

Peter Collins ARCA (1923–2001) Portrait of a Lady (after Toulouse-Lautrec), 1924 Pastel and charcoal on paper Dimensions without frame: 26cm x 21cm Peter Collins ARCA was a British painter, draughtsman, and illustrator known for his versatile technique and lyrical approach to portraiture and figure subjects. Born in London, he studied at the Royal College of Art (where he earned his Associate of the RCA) and later worked as a commercial illustrator and fine artist. His career spanned over five decades, encompassing portraiture, poster design, and large-scale decorative commissions. Collins’s art often combines sensitivity of line with expressive handling of tone and colour. Influenced by French modernism and early 20th-century graphic styles, his work reveals a deep admiration for artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas — whose attention to gesture, personality, and atmosphere he frequently echoed in his own portraits and studies. - This pastel and charcoal portrait, signed and dated 1924, is a refined study after Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, reinterpreted by Peter Collins ARCA in the spirit of homage rather than direct imitation. The subject, a lady in profile, is depicted with an economy of line and a soft interplay of pastel tones over charcoal drawing. Her face and upper torso are rendered with deft, fluid strokes, combining structural precision with expressive looseness. The background remains lightly worked, allowing the sitter’s features — delicate yet assertive — to command attention. Collins’s use of pastel imparts warmth and immediacy: subtle pinks, ochres, and greys evoke both the fashionable elegance and psychological nuance characteristic of Toulouse-Lautrec’s Parisian women. The charcoal underdrawing, visible in parts, lends graphic energy and spontaneity, while the pastel overlays soften contours, blending realism with impressionistic suggestion. Though clearly inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec’s style — particularly his portraits of café singers and dancers — Collins brings to the composition a distinctly British restraint and clarity of form. The result is a poised and sympathetic portrait that captures not only the visual essence of Lautrec’s model but also the interpretive intelligence of Collins himself.
