About the Item

Michael Lyne (1912–1989) was one of the most respected British sporting artists of the twentieth century, celebrated for his lively and instinctive depictions of hunting, shooting, and country life. Born into a family closely connected with field sports, Lyne developed a deep, firsthand understanding of hunting from an early age, which became the foundation of his artistic career. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and quickly distinguished himself for his ability to capture movement and atmosphere with remarkable economy of line. Lyne worked primarily in watercolour and ink, favouring speed, spontaneity, and direct observation over detailed finish. His work is characterised by confident brushwork, subtle colour harmonies, and a strong sense of rhythm and motion. Lyne exhibited regularly at major venues including the Royal Academy, and his work was widely reproduced in books, magazines, and prints, making him one of the best-known sporting artists of his generation. Today, his originals are highly sought after for their authenticity, vitality, and their ability to convey the lived experience of the British countryside. This watercolour depicts a fox being pressed by the hounds across open countryside, a classic Michael Lyne subject handled with assurance and restraint. The fox appears in the left foreground, low to the ground and stretched out in full flight, while the pack surges behind from the right, their bodies overlapping in a rhythmic cascade of movement. Lyne uses a wide, panoramic composition to convey scale and momentum. The rolling pastureland is rendered in warm ochres, pale greens, and soft straw-coloured tones, applied with broad, expressive strokes. The hounds are painted swiftly but decisively, their markings suggested rather than described, allowing the viewer’s eye to read motion rather than anatomy. In the middle and far distance, riders follow the line of the chase, reduced to small, lightly sketched figures that give depth and context without competing for attention. Hedgerows, fences, and gently rising fields structure the landscape, guiding the eye naturally across the scene. The sky is calm and open, painted in pale blues and greys, providing a quiet counterpoint to the urgency of the chase below. This balance between excitement and compositional calm is a hallmark of Lyne’s mature work. Signe bottom left Michael Lyne size of the gouache 30 x 49 cm
