About the Item

Title Seated Female Nude Back View French Modernist Acrylic Figure Drawing Artist Jacqueline Boisselot French late 20th century Medium Black acrylic on artist paper unframed Size 19.25 x 13 Height x width in inches Signature Unsigned Provenance Private collection Paris Condition Fair overall condition. The paper has pronounced creasing, folding and general surface undulation, together with age related toning and handling wear. There is a significant tear and area of paper loss at the lower right edge, further wear and small losses along the lower margin, and staining and discolouration towards the upper right corner. The principal figure remains clear and visually effective. The work would benefit from careful conservation mounting and sympathetic framing. Description A striking and highly economical seated female nude by Jacqueline Boisselot, executed in black acrylic on pale artist paper. The model is shown from behind in a compact crouched or seated pose, her body reduced to a small number of confident curving lines. Boisselot describes the figure through gesture rather than detailed anatomical modelling. The broad sweep of the back flows into the rounded hip and bent legs, while shorter marks indicate the shoulder, waist and division of the limbs. The body appears folded inward, creating an intimate and contemplative pose. The composition is especially effective in its use of negative space. Large areas of untouched paper surround the figure, allowing each black mark to carry considerable visual weight. The restrained treatment draws attention to the rhythm of the contours and to the artist’s ability to suggest volume with remarkably few strokes. A dark vertical passage towards the upper centre may indicate the model’s hair, an arm or a shadowed interior contour. Boisselot leaves this element deliberately ambiguous, allowing it to operate as both figurative detail and abstract shape. The longer marks around it form a loose architectural framework above the body, giving the compact pose greater vertical presence. The acrylic has been applied with varied pressure. Some strokes are dense and decisive, while others taper into dry, delicate lines that reveal the texture of the paper. These changes give the drawing movement and preserve the immediacy of a study made directly from the model. The figure’s rounded silhouette is balanced by sharper diagonal marks across the lower body. This contrast between curves and intersecting lines gives the otherwise minimal composition structure and tension. The drawing feels spontaneous, yet the placement of each mark is carefully judged. The creased and worn sheet contributes to the work’s studio character, although the substantial loss at the lower right should be clearly acknowledged. With careful mounting, much of the peripheral wear could be stabilised while retaining the drawing’s original, informal quality. From an interior perspective, this is a refined and versatile figure study. Its monochrome palette and tall format would suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, studies or minimalist contemporary interiors. It would also work particularly well within a gallery wall of modern nudes, line drawings and expressive works on paper. Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist active during the late 20th century, known for expressive figure studies, portraits, interiors, still lifes, landscapes and abstract compositions. Her work is characterised by confident observation, simplified forms and a sensitive approach to line, gesture and spatial balance.
