About the Item

Title Standing Female Nude Back View French Modernist Acrylic Figure Drawing Artist Jacqueline Boisselot French late 20th century Medium Black acrylic on artist paper unframed Size 15.25 x 9.75 Height x width in inches Signature Unsigned Provenance Private collection Paris Condition Good overall condition with light handling marks, gentle surface undulation and minor age related wear around the sheet edges. There are faint creases, small surface marks and slight rubbing consistent with age and studio storage. A pale transferred impression of the figure is visible verso. The principal composition remains clear, strong and ready for framing. Description A bold and economical standing female nude by Jacqueline Boisselot, executed in black acrylic on pale artist paper. The model is shown from behind in a subtly twisting pose, with one arm raised across the shoulder and the weight of the body shifting through the hips and legs. Boisselot describes the figure through broad, assured brushstrokes rather than detailed anatomical modelling. The head is left almost entirely blank, framed by dark sweeping marks that suggest hair falling around the neck and shoulders. This absence of facial detail directs attention towards gesture, silhouette and the physical rhythm of the pose. The upper body is structured through long curving lines that move from the raised arm across the shoulders and down through the back. Darker passages around the shoulder blade, waist and hip establish the principal changes of direction within the figure. The model’s torso appears to turn gently away from the viewer, creating a sense of movement despite the stillness of the pose. The lower body is defined with equal economy. Broad strokes mark the outer contours of the thighs and legs, while shorter interior lines suggest the division of the limbs and the shift of weight. Boisselot avoids overworking these areas, allowing the pale paper to form the illuminated body between the darker painted contours. The drawing is particularly effective in its combination of delicacy and strength. Some lines are applied in a single fluid movement, while others are reinforced with repeated strokes that leave visible traces of the brush. These variations give the figure vitality and preserve the immediacy of a study made directly from the model. Considerable negative space surrounds the figure, heightening the impact of the black marks and giving the composition a clean, modern character. The restrained monochrome palette allows the viewer to concentrate on line, balance and gesture rather than surface detail. The reverse carries a faint transferred image of the figure, likely caused by contact with another sheet during studio storage. This trace offers an additional insight into the physical history of the work and Boisselot’s working environment. From an interior perspective, this is a refined and versatile figure study. Its monochrome palette and tall portrait format would work especially well in bedrooms, dressing rooms, studies or minimalist contemporary interiors. It would also make an elegant addition to a gallery wall of modern nudes and expressive works on paper. Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist active during the late 20th century, known for expressive figure studies, portraits, interiors, still lifes, landscapes and abstract compositions. Her work is characterised by confident observation, simplified forms and a sensitive approach to line, gesture and spatial balance.
