About the Item

A highly decorative collection of three antique Chinese snuff bottles dating from the late Qing dynasty through the Republic of China period, approximately 1910–1930. The group brings together three contrasting materials and decorative traditions, including carved hardstone, cloisonné enamel and ruby-red overlay glass. The first is a substantial smoky-grey agate or chalcedony bottle of flattened rectangular form, the translucent stone displaying subtle natural tonal variation together with a dark mineral inclusion to one side. It retains an associated green hardstone stopper. The second is an elegant double-gourd-form cloisonné enamel snuff bottle, decorated throughout with flowering branches and blossoms against a turquoise-green ground. Fine gilt-metal wires define the scrolling cloud and floral decoration, complemented by blue enamel borders and gilt-metal fittings. It retains an elaborate branch-form stopper. The third is a clear glass bottle richly decorated in carved ruby-red overlay, with large avian motifs worked across opposing faces, including a phoenix-type bird with sweeping tail feathers. The bold red overlay contrasts strongly with the lightly bubbled transparent glass ground and is complemented by an associated red stopper with spoon. Together the three bottles form a particularly attractive small collection representing several important decorative traditions within Chinese snuff-bottle production during the late Qing and Republic periods.
