About the Item

A fine complementary pair of Chinese carved overlay glass snuff bottles dating to the late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1900. Each bottle is formed from an opaque milky-white glass ground and decorated with a contrasting layer of deeply carved coloured glass. One is worked in ruby-red overlay with a bird perched among flowering prunus branches, while the companion bottle is carved in cobalt-blue overlay with a lively goldfish amid aquatic plants. The coloured overlays continue around the shoulders and form contrasting bands at the mouth and foot. The overlay carving is particularly attractive at this compact scale, with individually articulated feathers, blossoms, branches, fish scales and flowing fins. Variations in the depth and contour of the carving reflect traditional hand workmanship. Both bottles retain closely matching period silver-coloured metal stoppers, decorated in relief with scrolling foliate ornament and surmounted by rounded turquoise-blue paste jewel finials. Each stopper retains its cork and integral snuff spoon. Given their closely corresponding construction, proportions, decoration and aged surfaces, the stoppers are likely original to the bottles. The undersides are carefully finished with circular recessed foot areas surrounded by carved coloured overlay decoration, further emphasizing the complementary red-and-blue presentation. An especially appealing pair combining two traditional Chinese auspicious subjects in contrasting ruby-red and cobalt-blue overlay glass. Their matching proportions and related stopper fittings give them considerably greater decorative presence when displayed together.
