About the Item

An attractive collection of three Chinese hardstone snuff bottles dating to the Republic period, approximately 1920–1940. The first is a carved blue lapis lazuli bottle, the richly mottled stone extensively worked in low relief with scrolling ruyi and lotus decoration. It retains a closely matched lapis stopper with spoon, circa 1920. The second is an unusual sculptural fish-form bottle carved from green serpentine stone. The upright fish is detailed with deeply incised scales, fins and tail, rising from a carved wave base, and retains an associated domed orange-red agate stopper (no cork or spoon) Circa 1920–1930. The third is carved from mottled green and yellow serpentine or related hardstone, of flattened pear form with four pierced shoulder lugs. The body is raised on an elegantly carved footring. It retains an associated pale green jade stopper with cork no spoon, circa 1940 Together the three bottles form a varied Republic-period collection combining blue and green hardstones with contrasting sculptural and traditional bottle forms.
