Louis XVI Grandfather Clocks and Longcase Clocks

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

The clock, crafted during the late nineteenth century—though the malachite finish is later—is inspired by a famous eighteenth-century original. The clock is of traditional form, which a cubic clock case inset with an enamel dial and a gilt bronze bezel cast with signs of the zodiac. The central section of the clock includes a window, which reveals the pendulum inside, while the lower section is in the form of a plinth. The malachite veneer is wonderfully varied, with lighter and darker shades of the stone utilised to add visual interest. A Model of Jean Henri Riesener (Received Master in 1768) executed in 1785. (Inv. OA 5501 in Louvre Museum). 19th century. This fine and sumptuous “Regulateur de Pendule” presents a fine amaranth. Of Sycamore oeuil de vermeuil, ebony and buis stringing marquetry. The base and the gaine are decorated with diamond shapes. The hours are inscribed in Roman numerals and the munutes in Arabic. It takes place in a magnificent gilt décor of three winged children playing with garlands on clouds. The regulator is enriched with a delicate garniture of bronze. The dial and each panel are framed by an elegant frieze of palms and pearls. The top of the gaine is enhanced with a frieze of palms and ovums, foliages and garlands of flowers. Each corner is ornated with fleurons. The front of the gaine is embellished by an Apollo mask (Sun Symbol) and each side with laurel crowns. Under the mask the cartouche is decorated by a stylized vase of flowers. Folliated scrolls, flowers, garlands, cornucopias and musical instruments such as a harp (Apollo Reference) The cherubs are underlined by pearls, scrolls of Acanthus Leaves and garlands dawning out in foliages, framed with ropes until the lions feet. The feet rest on a base ornated with fleurons and foliages with buds of flowers ending in four conical feet with acanthus leaves. With André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) and Charles Cressent (1685-1768), Riesener was arguably one of the three greatest French ébénistes of the 18th century. After the rediscovery of the ancient Roman cities, Herculaneum and Pompeii (1709 and 1738, respectively), Neoclassical themes became popular. During the reign of Louis XVI, these elements were often paired with themes from nature to form highly carved pieces of furniture, such as this antique clock case. hand carved circa 1890 from oak, the shapely clock is referred to as a demoiselle. The original finish has been bleached, allowing the supple curves and intricate carvings to gain prominence. A large white clock face with blue numerals can be seen behind a circular pane of glass surrounded by raised molding adorned with cordate leaf tips. Two carvings (one with a pair of flowers and the other with a fringed linenfold swag) embellish the bonnet, between a molded crown with a subtle arch and recessed galbee sides. The clock case stands on a curved cut-out base, the lower part of which is carved out in a typical 18th century manner. The door of the clock case has a large viewing window and is decorated with carved and gilded friezes and flowers. On the left and right outside there is a window to look into the movement. The head is also designed to match. The highlight at the top is a carved and stuccoed mythical sea creature. The weight-driven eight-day movement is also of particularly high quality.
