About the Item

An impressive French three-piece clock garniture dating to circa 1870, comprising a substantial alabaster mantel clock accompanied by a matching pair of four-light candelabra. Designed in the Neoclassical and Grecian Revival taste, the architectural clock case is constructed in pale alabaster and enriched with finely detailed gilt-metal mounts. Classical ornament, including prominent lion-mask embellishments, provides a striking contrast against the softly figured stone. The circular enamel dial is detailed with Roman numerals and twin winding apertures, housing a traditional eight-day movement designed to strike on a bell. Comparable French clock garnitures combining architectural cases, Roman-numeral dials and multi-light candelabra were fashionable during the Second Empire period around 1870. The accompanying candelabra are conceived en suite, each rising from an alabaster base and supporting an elegant arrangement of four scrolling gilt-metal candle branches. Together, the three pieces create the balanced symmetry traditionally associated with grand 19th-century mantel garnitures. The combination of alabaster, classical ornament and gilded metalwork gives the set considerable decorative presence, making it particularly suited to a formal drawing room, entrance hall, library or period mantelpiece. A handsome example of French Second Empire decorative arts, combining horology, sculptural ornament and classical revival design in an impressive coordinated ensemble. A refined French mantel clock garniture set executed in gilt bronze and white stone, dating to the 19th century. The ensemble consists of a central pendulum clock accompanied by a matching pair of decorative urns. The architectural composition with classical columns reflects the neoclassical taste characteristic of French decorative arts of the period. The clock features an enamel dial with black numerals and finely shaped hands, housed within a cylindrical case suspended between two columns. The case is adorned with cast gilt bronze mounts incorporating floral and classical decorative motifs, while the pendulum is decorated with a sun mask motif. The accompanying urns echo the design language of the clock, combining white stone bodies with gilt bronze mounts and twin handles, creating a balanced three-piece composition suitable for mantel or console display.
