About the Item

This is an impressive large-scale Italian ceramic vase designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi and imported to the United States by Raymor, one of the foremost purveyors of Italian modern design during the mid-20th century. Retaining its original Raymor paper label on the underside, the vase is a fine example of the bold sculptural ceramics that established Bitossi as one of Italy's most celebrated postwar manufacturers. Standing an impressive 18 inches high, the vase features a gracefully tapered architectural silhouette enriched by Bitossi's distinctive hand-incised textured surface. The vessel is decorated with an abstract composition of charcoal black, ivory, ochre, terracotta orange and muted plum geometric forms that wrap continuously around the body, creating a dynamic interplay of color, texture and form from every angle. The deeply impressed surface catches the light beautifully, emphasizing the handcrafted nature of the piece while showcasing the expressive modernist vocabulary for which Aldo Londi became renowned. Subtle yellowish tonal variations visible within portions of the ivory glaze are original to the manufacturing process and contribute to the vase's handcrafted character rather than representing later staining or discoloration. The underside retains its original Raymor import label, further supporting the vase's period authenticity and original distribution through the influential American importer. The vase presents beautifully and is structurally sound. It has undergone a professional restoration to a single U-shaped section at the rim, where one cleanly broken fragment was expertly reattached. The repair is stable and professionally executed, though portions remain visible upon close inspection and are documented in the accompanying photographs for complete transparency. Aside from the restoration, the vase exhibits light surface wear and minor marks consistent with age and gentle use that do not detract from its exceptional decorative presence. Dimensions 18 in.
