About the Item

Here is a striking and architectonic ceramic vase designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi, Italy, circa 1960s, from the sought-after Mondrian series. Defined by its bold geometric composition and richly tactile surface, the form is wrapped in blocks of saturated orange, red-orange, and deep charcoal-black-brown glazes, recalling the abstract visual language of Piet Mondrian while remaining distinctly Italian in materiality and execution. The cylindrical silhouette is substantial in scale, standing an impressive 16 inches high, with Londi’s signature emphasis on texture and artisanal glaze work evident throughout. The surface reveals nuanced tonal variation, subtle pitting, and an intentionally rugged, hand-finished quality characteristic of Bitossi’s mid-century studio production. A lighter circular area within the red glaze appears to have occurred during manufacture and presents as part of the original firing process rather than later wear. Graphic yet sculptural, this vase functions equally well as a standalone object or as a vessel for dramatic branches, bringing strong mid-century Italian presence to a shelf, pedestal, or tabletop. Dimensions: 16 in. H × 6.75 in. W × 5 in. D Condition: Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There appears to be a professional repair to the underside/base of the vase. The body presents beautifully overall, with no significant condition issues visible in display. Variations in glaze, including a lighter circular area within the red field, appear to be from the time of manufacture and are not later flaws.
