About the Item

This magnificent late Victorian three-trumpet glass epergne, dating to approximately 1890, is a spectacular and highly decorative example of 19th-century English art glass. The impressive 23-inch centrepiece combines ruby, blue opalescent, white and uranium/vaseline glass, creating a wonderfully vibrant colour palette. The lower sections display a particularly attractive green fluorescence under a 405nm UV light, while parts of the applied spiral rigaree trail also fluoresce beautifully. The epergne has been skilfully hand-blown and features an elaborate applied spiral trail, crimped and frilled edges and three elegant trumpet-shaped vases. The central trumpet screws securely into the decorative base, while the two smaller side trumpets are removable. The side trumpet fittings are supported internally to minimise movement. The construction is particularly impressive for a piece more than 130 years old. The main components can be carefully dismantled for storage when not in use. Due to its age and delicate construction, it should naturally be handled with care when assembling and disassembling. The combination of uranium glass, ruby, opalescent blue and intricate Victorian workmanship makes this an exceptional display piece and a highly desirable addition to a serious antique glass collection. It would look spectacular displayed with flowers, but is equally impressive as a standalone centrepiece. An especially unusual gift for a collector or for a wedding, anniversary or special occasion. RESEARCH NOTES Glass epergnes became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period. Their origins can be traced to earlier 18th-century silver serving pieces designed for fruit, sweets and other table decorations. By the 19th century, glass versions became increasingly popular and offered considerably more elaborate possibilities for colour, form and decoration. By the later Victorian period, epergnes had evolved increasingly into decorative floral centrepieces, with narrow trumpet-shaped flutes designed particularly for displaying flowers. Victorian manufacturers produced epergnes in a wide variety of coloured and decorative glass, including cranberry, opalescent and vaseline/uranium glass. Organic forms resembling flowers and lilies became especially fashionable towards the end of the century. This example's combination of three trumpet vases, vibrant cased colours, opalescence and applied rigaree decoration makes it a particularly striking example of the Victorian epergne tradition.
