About the Item

A rare and highly decorative French Napoleon III-period epergne, dating to approximately 1850, combining a beautifully formed ruby glass flute with a small gilded bronze and marble presentation tray. This charming piece has considerable decorative appeal, with its ruby-red glass fading towards clear, an attractive ruffled rim and an elegant wrythen or twisted glass stem. The glass is beautifully complemented by the pale marble and warm gilding of the bronze mount. The overall effect is quintessentially 19th-century French decorative art, with the combination of coloured glass, gilded metal and marble creating the luxurious appearance associated with the interiors of the period. I acquired this piece from a château brocante in Paris, adding to its French decorative provenance. Design & Decoration The epergne features a central glass stem rising from the decorative base and terminating in a five-petalled, curved flower-like holder. The ruby glass gradually fades towards clear, producing a particularly attractive graduated effect. The twisted glass stem adds further movement and catches the light beautifully. The glass sits within a gilded bronze mount on a pale marble tray, with pierced decorative edging and an ornamental band around the marble. The combination of the ruby glass, gilded bronze and pale stone makes this a particularly attractive tabletop object. It could be displayed simply as a decorative object, used to hold a small floral arrangement, or adapted as a candle holder. A charming piece for a dining table, mantelpiece, console, dressing table or display cabinet, and equally suitable as an unusual gift for a collector of French glass and decorative arts. Measurements Height: 8 in. (approximately 20.3 cm) Length: 8 in. (approximately 20.3 cm) Width: 3¾ in. (approximately 9.5 cm) Weight: approximately 80 g Condition Excellent antique condition commensurate with age. The glass epergne has no damage noted. The bronze mounts are also in very good condition, with some minor loss of gilding to the handles and feet. The marble has a couple of small natural pits visible upon close inspection, consistent with age. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description. A Beautiful French Decorative Object With its ruby-to-clear ruffled glass, wrythen stem, gilded bronze mount and marble tray, this is an unusually attractive survivor from the Napoleon III period. Whether used for entertaining, displayed as a decorative objet d'art or simply enjoyed for its beautiful combination of materials, it would bring an unmistakable touch of 19th-century French elegance to an interior.
