About the Item

Textured Italian ceramic vase attributed to Fratelli Fanciullacci and made circa 1970. The tall cylindrical body is decorated with incised triangles, zigzags and linear bands in ochre orange, green, turquoise, violet and charcoal. Areas of coarse, lava-like glaze give the surface depth while emphasising the bold geometric pattern. The combination of vivid colour, incised decoration and heavily textured glaze reflects the experimental character of Italian art pottery during the 1960s and 1970s. The vase is unmarked, and the attribution to Fratelli Fanciullacci is based on its form, glaze treatment and decorative language. “Alla Moda” is not the name of a documented Fratelli Fanciullacci series. The phrase became associated with colourful and experimental Italian ceramics through Mark Hill’s book and exhibition Alla Moda: Italian Ceramics of the 1950s–70s. These ceramics are known for textured glazes, incised surfaces and energetic geometric decoration. Fratelli Fanciullacci was founded in 1862 and transferred its production to Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany, in 1913. The manufactory became an important exporter of Italian ceramics and is particularly associated with postwar vessels combining relief decoration, vivid colour and varied glaze textures. Production ended in 1988.
