About the Item

This hand-thrown stoneware vase by German ceramic artist Wolf-Diether Pölloth combines a restrained bottle form with an expressive, painterly glaze. Broad fields of black and smoky gray flow across rose-pink and reddish-brown areas, creating a layered surface that changes as the vessel is viewed from different angles. The rounded body and narrow neck provide a controlled framework for the freely applied glaze. In places, the reddish-brown stoneware remains visible, adding warmth and emphasizing the material beneath the darker surface treatment. The contrast between the balanced form and fluid decoration is characteristic of Pölloth’s approach to German studio pottery. Wolf-Diether Pölloth (1937-1999) trained in Selb and later worked in Hof, Bavaria. His individually made stoneware vessels are known for combining traditional wheel throwing with atmospheric glaze compositions in black, gray, rose and earthy tones. His work belongs to the postwar German Studiokeramik movement, in which individual craftsmanship and glaze experimentation played a central role.
