About the Item

A mid-century celadon-glazed studio pottery vase, hand-thrown in a German-speaking European workshop. Its generous pear-shaped body rises into a slender neck with a small opening, creating a calm, well-balanced silhouette inspired by classical East Asian ceramics. The pale blue-green glaze changes subtly with the light, moving between soft celadon, gray, and aqua tones. Fine crackling across the surface adds depth and gives the glaze a beautifully layered appearance. Together with the restrained form, it recalls the quiet color and delicately crazed surfaces associated with historic Chinese celadon wares, interpreted here through a distinctly European studio-pottery sensibility. The underside is incised “Handgedreht,” meaning hand-thrown, and bears an unidentified S within a circle. The maker and precise country of origin remain unknown, although the German inscription points to Germany or another German-speaking region. The ceramic body has not been laboratory identified, so it is described conservatively as ceramic rather than porcelain or stoneware.
