Fratelli Toso is one of the most important and enduring glassmaking firms of Murano, founded in 1854 by six Toso brothers. From the late 19th century onward, the company played a pivotal role in the renewal of Venetian glassmaking, combining traditional techniques with innovative decorative approaches. At the beginning of the 20th century, Fratelli Toso became especially celebrated for its development of richly colored murrine-based glass, including the celebrated Fenicia, Millefiori, and A Tessere décors. The Fenicia décor, in particular, drew inspiration from ancient Phoenician and Roman mosaic glass, reinterpreted through a modern lens with vibrant, densely patterned surfaces. Fratelli Toso glass from this period is admired for its technical complexity, refined color palettes, and strong historical references. The firm exhibited internationally and contributed significantly to the worldwide reputation of Murano glass as a luxury art form. Today, early Fratelli Toso Murano pieces are highly sought after by collectors and are represented in major museum collections, standing as icons of Italian decorative arts and the evolution of modern art glass.
