Pisgah Forest Oxblood Ombre Vase, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1939

Pisgah Forest Oxblood Ombre Vase, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1939

By North Carolina Pottery

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Beautiful rounded vase is decorated with light to dark oxblood red ombre craquelure glaze; the glaze is in high gloss finish and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze. The vase is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC. OTTO HEINTZ Art & Craft 1890 Fluted Vase Polished Brass & Sterling Silver Orchid

OTTO HEINTZ Art & Craft 1890 Fluted Vase Polished Brass & Sterling Silver Orchid

By Otto Heintz, Heintz Art Metal Shop

Located in Miami, FL

A fluted art & craft vase designed by Otto Heintz. This is a very decorative art & craft vase created during the art nouveau period by Otto Heintz. Crafted in America in solid polished brass and embellished with an orchid cut-off from a template made of .925/.999 solid sterling silver. Simple vase with great eye appeal and beautifully made with a very nice synthesis of an orchid. Otto Heintz Otto L. Heintz was born into a family of manufacturing jewelers established in 1875 in Buffalo, NY. By about 1902 he had purchased a small company, renamed it the Art Crafts Shop, and began design and manufacture of copper items with colored enamel decoration. He was granted three patents. By 1906 he changed the name to Heintz Art Metal Shop, and shifted to bronze as the base material and sterling silver as ornamentation. The Art Crafts Shop’s hammered “look” was replaced by a series of machine-shaped bodies with sophisticated patinas. The definitive patents for applying sterling silver to bronze without solder was granted August 27, 1912. Heintz line consisted of vases and bowls, candlesticks, smoking accessories, trophies, lamps, desk accessories, picture frames, bookends, and jewelry. From a circa 1916 trade catalog: “Heintz wares have won an enviable reputation among buyers of art goods, because of originality and beauty of design, and unusual quality of attractiveness. Country: New York, United States. Period: Art & Crafts, art nouveau, 1890-1900 Materials: Polished bronze and sterling silver. Weight: 475 Grams, (0.48 Kg.). Measurements: H. 222.25 mm by Diameter 120.65 mm (8.75 x 4.75 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the mark for the assay and warranty of the .925/.999 silver as follows: "STERLING". Condition: The overall condition of this Otto Heintz vase...

Douglas Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Crater Glaze Bud Vase, American Studio Pottery
Douglas Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Crater Glaze Bud Vase, American Studio Pottery

Douglas Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Crater Glaze Bud Vase, American Studio Pottery

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Vintage hand-thrown vase features complex Crater glaze in off-white and espresso brown colors. Minimal color palette and streamlined shape of the piece allow the textured glaze with variations from semi-matte to high gloss to take the spotlight; slightly asymmetrical rim adds hand-crafted, Organic Modern mood to the vase design. The vase is personally signed by Douglas Ferguson on the bottom with his name and "Pigeon Forge Pottery Tenn". The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings. Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze. In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...

The piece is in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks and measures 3.5"D x 5.75"H. Hard to find piece of Catalina Pottery! #4359 Catalina Pottery (or Catalina Island Pottery) is the commonly used name for Catalina Clay Products, a division of the Santa Catalina Island Company, which produced brick, tile, tableware and decorative pottery on Santa Catalina Island, California. Catalina Clay Products was founded in 1927 by William Wrigley, Jr. of the Wrigley chewing gum family. He built a tile and brick pottery factory on a beach located near Avalon, Santa Catalina Island. The new pottery became Catalina Clay Products, a division of Wrigley's Santa Catalina Island Company. The pottery used local clays from the Island and had two business purposes: to produce clay building products and to provide the much needed year-round employment for Island residents. Gladding, McBean & Co. acquired all of the assets of the company in 1937 and moved all production to its Franciscan dinnerware...
