Carl Erickson Sommerso Vase, American Art Studio Glass 1940s-1950s
Carl Erickson Sommerso Vase, American Art Studio Glass 1940s-1950s

Carl Erickson Sommerso Vase, American Art Studio Glass 1940s-1950s

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Sculptural Mid Century Modern teal and clear glass decorative vase was created by Carl Erickson for Erickson Glass Works. The vase has Erickson's typical heavy encased glass design, with the teal glass gather encased in clear glass in sommerso technique and the pronounced base done in clear glass with controlled bubbles. The pontil is ground. The vase is in good vintage condition with some age-appropriate signs of wear on the bottom. It is unsigned, as vast majority of Ericson piece were, and is missing its sticker, but can be clearly identified by multiple printed and online catalogues and other resources. Carl Erickson (1899-1966) worked at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, joining his father as an apprentice and spending the next 20 years developing a high level of craftsmanship, including precision use of controlled bubbles, a technique often associated with Pairpoint, that was widely used by Erickson in his own glass designs. In the early 1930s he was employed by Libbey Glass and from 1937 - by the Blenko Glass Company. After leaving Blenko, Carl founded his own art glass studio in Bremen, Ohio in 1943. Erickson glass was hand blown, so no two pieces could be identical. Erickson made reproductions for a number of museums, including the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., Old Sturbridge Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Ohio State Historical Society Museum. Many of his glass creations have been selected for display at several distinguished museums, and in 1953 a traveling...

Lee Levy Multi Spouted Vase, American Studio Pottery
Lee Levy Multi Spouted Vase, American Studio Pottery

Lee Levy Multi Spouted Vase, American Studio Pottery

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Vintage ceramic bud vase features sculptural multi spouted shape and stunning textured drip glaze in earthy, organic brown palette. The gradation glaze color and abstract graphic pattern of the main decor emphasize the soft, rounded shape of the vase; the use of shades of brown, from dark espresso to mocha to off-shite cappuccino, creates rich and varied, but monochromatic palette that does not overpower the complex form and shape of the vase. The vase is signed on the bottom with LEE, that was Lee Levy customary signature; it is not dated, but the style of the piece is consistent with her Mid-Century Modern pieces created in 1960s-1970s. Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011) was an established pottery artist based in Upstate New York area. She was born in Pinsk, formerly in Poland, now in Belarus, and moved to the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She and her husband Irving started their first pottery studio in Long Island, New York, in late 1940s, while training at the Alfred University School of Ceramics alongside with some of the foremost artists and craftsman in America. Since 1946, Alfred University in Alfred, New York was a home for School for American Craftsmen, with the faculty that included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, and most importantly for Levy, the renowned ceramists Linn Phelan and Herbert Sanders...

Crystalline Glaze Bud Vase Blue & Yellow, American Art Studio Pottery
Crystalline Glaze Bud Vase Blue & Yellow, American Art Studio Pottery

Crystalline Glaze Bud Vase Blue & Yellow, American Art Studio Pottery

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

The striking vintage studio pottery ceramic vase is decorated with crystalline glaze in contrasting blue and mustard yellow colors. The vase was hand thrown on a wheel; blue color crystals on ombre colored base, shifting from ligher shade of yellow on top to deep mustard yellow on the bottom, were grown in a kiln during a very long, controlled firing. Each crystalline piece is unique due to the nature of the glaze. The vase was allowed to develop an abundance of distinct, graphic crystals, creating a free-flowing abstract pattern and adding rich texture to the minimally shaped piece. The vase was made by Wizards of Clay, studio pottery in Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY. Since 1962 the family-run studio creates traditional pottery in variety of glazes. The vase is clearly signed on the bottom. Sculptural Organic Modern bud vase...

Tiffany Studios New York "Pansy" Favrile Glass Vase
Tiffany Studios New York "Pansy" Favrile Glass Vase

Tiffany Studios New York "Pansy" Favrile Glass Vase

By Tiffany Studios

Located in New York, NY

Known as a "Pansy" vase, this Favrile glass creation by Tiffany Studios New York begins with a bulbous base in deep hues of striated, swirling iridescent yellow and gold. Shooting upward from the base is an elongated, narrow neck of similar coloration, darkening in coloration as it ascends. From the narrow neck explodes an outward facing glass bloom in brilliant shades of ochre, umber and marigold, made to shimmer by the undulations in the bloom's outer edges, all tinged with iridescence. Item #: T-22418 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 17" height, 8.75" width, 4.5" depth. Materials: Favrile Glass Signed: L.C.T. Y1789 Literature: A similar vase is pictured in Timeless Beauty: The Art of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Atglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing, 2016, p. 179; and in: The Tiffany Collection of the Chrysler Museum at Norfolk, by Paul E. Doros, Richmond, VA: W. M. Brown & son, Inc., 1978, p. 40, cat. no. 47 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: The term “Jack-in-the-Pulpit,” commonly used by collectors today, is in fact a misnomer; this model is more accurately identified as a “Pansy” vase. The form of this Favrile “Pansy” vase was first developed by gaffer John Hollingsworth (American, born England, 1851–1923) in 1906. Like all of Tiffany’s skilled glassmakers, Hollingsworth was encouraged to experiment at the furnace, fostering continual innovation in form and finish. Its gold Favrile surface begins as luminous yellow uranium glass, then achieves its signature iridescence through a delicate spray of silver nitrate. From the outset, these vases were highly prized by early collectors of Tiffany’s blown glass...
