About the Item

A rare and highly decorative Victorian folding pocket sundial with integrated compass, attributed to J. Baum & Co of Birmingham and dated 1875, representing a fascinating example of 19th-century British portable scientific instrumentation. Finely constructed in gilt metal, the compact hinged instrument combines practical timekeeping with elaborate Victorian ornamentation. The surfaces are richly engraved with scrolling foliate motifs, radiating hour divisions and numerals, giving the piece considerable decorative appeal beyond its original scientific purpose. An inset circular compass is incorporated into the instrument, allowing the sundial to be correctly orientated before use. At the centre is a hinged folding gnomon, designed to be raised when taking a solar-time reading and folded flat when the instrument was being carried. This ingenious compact construction made portable sundials particularly useful to travellers and those with an interest in navigation and scientific instruments. The combination of engraved decoration, folding construction, compass and gilt finish makes this an especially appealing Victorian curiosity. Its compact proportions would have allowed it to be easily carried in a pocket or travelling case. The piece displays an attractive aged surface with rubbing, scratches, oxidation and other wear consistent with its considerable age and use. The compass glass shows cracking and age-related deterioration, while the gilt metal has developed a pleasing antique patina.
