About the Item

This set of carved wood chairs manage to be both rustic and refined. Done in Baroque style with nail head-trimmed velvet upholstered seats in the color of a fine pinot noir to compliment the needlepointed classical scenes on the backs, these chairs date from the 1930s—a challenging period at best. The frame was crafted in solid walnut, featuring a bobbin-turned legs comprised of a series of small spheres and sculptural carvings on the cross-stretchers. The series of four French-style needlework tapestries depict an idealized everyday life in the 18th century. These scenes include figures in traditional or "peasant" dress, engaged in light labor, social interaction, or leisure in the countryside. They were intended to evoke a sense of romanticism and domesticity while looking back to a simpler, pre-industrial era. "Old English" or "Continental" village life represented a template for beauty and order—just the thing to enhance the ambiance of your wine cellar. Maker’s mark: nonexistent
