About the Item

A late‑18th‑century George III mahogany serpentine chest of four graduated drawers. Circa 1790. The chest has been re‑French polished at least 30–40 years ago. It now has a soft, mellow sheen. There are age‑related knocks and marks present, from before and after the polish, as expected, but the piece remains visually cohesive and richly coloured. Please refer to the photographs. The right hand front bracket foot has ben replaced at some point in its life, though not recently - probably when refinished, as have the runners on the base of the drawers. The original escutcheons and locks are present, but no keys. The handles are attractive later replacements - likely early twentieth century - which have fitted the original holes, and have a pleasing patina. Veneered throughout in richly figured crown mahogany, with matching grain to the front. The drawers are lined in solid oak and they run smoothly. The third one down is a little tight when opening, but fully usable. There are some marks with use to the interior space. There is no woodworm to the chest. A classic example of late Georgian craftsmanship, offering both presence and practicality.
