About the Item

Attributed to Rene Gabriel, Reconstruction Oak Armoire, France, 1940s. This two-door oak armoire is built in the French Reconstruction idiom of the immediate postwar years, combining solid oak framing with paneled door fronts. The upright silhouette rests on splayed compass legs that lift the case and give it an architectural stance. Each door is divided into recessed rectangular panels framed by broad oak stiles and rails, with simple keyhole escutcheons at the meeting rails serving as the sole hardware. The oak armoire retains its warm honeyed tone across the frame and panels, showing the pared-down joinery and honest construction associated with René Gabriel and the Reconstruction period. The interior offers practical wardrobe storage behind the paneled oak doors. Good vintage condition. Minor surface marks, scratches, and wear consistent with age and use, with some tonal variation across the panels.
